The journalists from South-East region visited REGIO projects
On Wednesday, 29 September, the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism organised a visit for media representatives to three projects in the South-East development region, financed under REGIO – the Regional Operational Programme. The meeting was attended by Gabriel Friptu, General Manager, AM POR, Luminita Mihailov, General Manager of the South East Regional Development Agency, as well as project beneficiaries.
The first visited objective was the ,I>“Ecaterina Teodoroiu” school in Braila, included in the project "Retrofit and rehabilitation of the No.17 "Ecaterina Teodoroiu" school with classes I – VIII, Brăila”. The aim of the project was to improve the quality of educational infrastructure and of the school equipment by retrofitting, modernising and arranging the building. Its total value was 1,945,247.78 lei, of which 1,601,968.76 lei represented non-reimbursable financial assistance and contribution from the national budget. The project implementation period was 18 months, but, following the completion of the activities in advance, the project implementation period was reduced to 13 months. Thus, the finalisation date became 29 August 2010.
The second visited objective was the “St. Spiridon” home for the elderly, Galati, rehabilitated under the project "Modernisation of the buildings of "St. Spiridon" home for the elderly, Galati”
. Its total value was 3,499,444.90 lei, of which 2,498,175.50 lei represented non-reimbursable financial assistance and contribution from the national budget. The implementation of the project lasted 14 months, ending on 29 September 2010.
The last visited place was the site of the project "Modernisation of Basarabia street between Energiei Square and George Cosbuc Blvd., Galati municipality”, whose aims is to streamline the urban traffic, to reduce transport time, to eliminate bottlenecks and to cross the city in safety conditions. The total value of the project was 13,546,065.41 lei, of which 10,625,909.99 lei represented non-reimbursable financial assistance and contribution from the national budget. The project implementation runs over 24 months, and is to be completed on 19 February 2011.

The Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism, as Managing Authority, manages REGIO - the Regional Operational Programme, under which 4.4 billion euros are allocated during the period 2007 - 2013, of which 85% represents the contribution of the European Union. The overall objective of REGIO is to support and promote sustainable local development in the regions of Romania, both economically and socially, by reducing development disparities between them and the other regions of the European Union.
